Happy hour is almost part of the culture of living in South Florida.

Some places are packed. Others start slowly. People stop in for a drink, order something to eat, start talking and stay a while. And on any given afternoon, you can find yourself surrounded by people and not know a single one of them.

For Scott Walker, almost everything about that summer was new.

He had recently left Manhattan and moved to Fort Lauderdale. There were new streets to learn, new places to discover, new faces everywhere and all of the ordinary little things that come with making a life somewhere you don't quite know yet.

One of the places Scott discovered was Fleming's on Las Olas Boulevard.

Fleming's was fairly new to Fort Lauderdale, itself, having opened just months before Scott arrived. It sat in the heart of Las Olas, with high ceilings, a large open dining room, a covered patio, and the kind of lively atmosphere that seemed to fit right into its new South Florida home.

By then, Fleming's had also begun offering something it called Social Hour in the late afternoon.

Scott went in one afternoon for a drink and something to eat.

When the bill came, it was somewhere around fifty dollars.

Fresh from Manhattan, a fifty dollar check was enough to get Scott's attention.

Here was a place where he could go out, have something to eat, have a drink, be around people and enjoy the afternoon without the kind of bill he had grown accustomed to in New York.

How many other places like this were out there?

At that moment, on July 12, 2023, Scott opened Facebook and asked a pretty simple question:

There was no grand plan behind it. Scott was new to Fort Lauderdale, still finding his way around, and curious about where people went and what they did.

He posted the question and went on with his day:

What he didn't know was how many people were waiting to answer it.

“Are there any other good happy hours down here?”

“Strangers become friends.
Friends become family who travel with me.”
